Chocolate Oat Bars – A quick energy boost for busy days

Chocolate oat bars are a type of baked dessert or snack made primarily from oats, chocolate, butter or oil, sugar, and sometimes other ingredients like nuts or dried fruit. They’re typically prepared by mixing together oats, melted chocolate, and other ingredients, pressing the mixture into a pan, and then baking until firm. Once cooled, they’re cut into bars or squares.

Chocolate oat bars is similar recipes for oat-based bars, which have been enjoyed in various forms in different cultures for a long time. However, they’re often associated with modern Western cuisine, particularly in regions where oats are a common ingredient. They’re popular as a homemade treat or can also be found in bakeries and cafes.

You can totally try to make your own chocolate oat bars while they typically require basic pantry staples like oats, chocolate, butter or oil, and sugar, making them easy to whip up with ingredients readily available in most kitchens. Here’s a basic recipe to get you through the process:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rolled oats (old-fashioned oats)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts, dried fruit, or shredded coconut for extra flavor and texture

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the sides for easy removal later.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. Stir until well combined.
  3. Add the melted butter and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and everything is evenly moistened.
  4. Reserve about 1/2 cup of the oat mixture for topping, then press the rest firmly into the prepared baking pan in an even layer.
  5. Sprinkle the chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate) evenly over the oat mixture in the pan. If using any additional add-ins like nuts or dried fruit, sprinkle them over the chocolate.
  6. Crumble the reserved oat mixture evenly over the top of the chocolate layer, pressing down lightly.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are slightly crisp.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper overhang and transfer to a cutting board.
  9. Use a sharp knife to cut the cooled bars into squares or rectangles. Enjoy your homemade chocolate oat bars!

These bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for several days, or they can be frozen for longer storage. Enjoy!
