Chocolate Tiramisu – An accessible recipe to home cooks of all levels

Chocolate tiramisu is a delicious twist on the classic Italian dessert, tiramisu, which traditionally features layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, and cocoa powder. In chocolate tiramisu, chocolate is incorporated into the dessert in various forms, such as chocolate-flavored ladyfingers, chocolate mascarpone filling, or chocolate shavings on top.

Tiramisu itself is believed to have originated in the Veneto region of Italy, specifically in the city of Treviso or the region’s capital, Venice, in the late 20th century. Tiramisu, which translates to “pick me up” or “lift me up” in Italian, has since become a beloved dessert around the world, known for its creamy texture, rich flavor, and indulgent layers.

Chocolate tiramisu likely emerged as a variation of the traditional recipe to satisfy the cravings of chocolate lovers or to offer a unique twist on the classic dessert. It combines the flavors of chocolate with the familiar elements of tiramisu, creating a decadent and satisfying treat for those who appreciate both chocolate and Italian desserts.

Chocolate tiramisu can be prepared in advance and chilled until serving time, making it convenient for entertaining. This allows home cooks to focus on other aspects of the meal or event without having to worry about last-minute dessert preparation. Here’s a simple recipe for making chocolate tiramisu at home:

Ingredients:

For the chocolate mascarpone filling:

  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
  • 8 ounces (225g) mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ounces (115g) semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled

For assembling the tiramisu:

  • 1 cup (240ml) strong brewed coffee, cooled to room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 24 ladyfinger cookies (savoiardi)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
  • Chocolate shavings or grated chocolate, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the chocolate mascarpone filling:
  • In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  • In another bowl, beat the softened mascarpone cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Fold the melted chocolate into the mascarpone mixture until well combined.
  • Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  1. Assemble the tiramisu:
  • In a shallow dish, combine the brewed coffee and coffee liqueur (if using).
  • Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are soaked but not soggy.
  • Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9×9 inch (23x23cm) square dish or a similar-sized serving dish.
  • Spread half of the chocolate mascarpone filling over the layer of ladyfingers, smoothing it out with a spatula.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining soaked ladyfingers and chocolate mascarpone filling.
  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the tiramisu to set.
  1. Serve:
  • Before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Optionally, garnish with chocolate shavings or grated chocolate for an extra chocolatey touch.
  • Slice and serve chilled. Enjoy your homemade chocolate tiramisu!

Feel free to adjust the recipe to your taste preferences, such as adding more or less sugar, adjusting the amount of coffee or liqueur, or incorporating additional flavors like orange zest or almond extract.
